I have already introduced you to this musician in my #ttt N 119. Today it will be a special post exclusively about Sergey Kuryokhin - more bio details and his music.
Above: covers of his releases. Most of them look pretty avantgarde!Kuryokhin was one of the most prominent figures of the Russian underground scene in the 80s. The boy's genius was already evident in school; Kuryokhin developed a career as a professional pianist and eventually became a real virtuoso - but he was unable to find his place, to "fit in" with the official-official structures. At first, he played in jazz bands, and in the early 80s - when Russian rock experienced a stage of rapid growth - he managed to play in many rock bands in St. Petersburg. In the second half of the 80s and early 90s, he assembled his own band called "Pop Mechanics" and gave concerts all over the world (but it cannot be called purely "musical"). It would not be an exaggeration to say that he lost interest in music as an art form (and in contemporary art in general, too), and the 90s saw his penetration into television - as a showman, screenwriter, talk show participant and politician.
Unfortunately, in 1996, Kuryokhin suddenly died of a rare disease. But during his short career, he managed to do a lot. Although his music is quite simply structured, but - being "fertilized" by his spirit and charisma, it inflamed thousands of people, and still remains with us. This is a wonderful post-modern piece of our culture...
Pop mechanics - Insect culture (fragment; recorded 1985, released 1987)
'Insect culture' for me is one of his favorite and iconic releases, which I never get tired of returning to again and again. The recording was made in the distant and still very Soviet year of 1985 - before Perestroika! - in collaboration with sound artists Igor Verichev and Valery Alakhov (which formed the band 'NEW COMPOSERS') in the spirit of social art: it mixed in a pretty mocking manner sound collages from Soviet radio broadcasts, theater performances and film dialogs, phrases, intonations, rhythms and melodies painfully familiar to every Soviet person. Of course, the Soviet censorship did not approve and would never have passed such a release - the vinyl record was released in Europe in 1987... As "NME" reviewed this release, "POPULAR MECHANICS managed to penetrate the spirit of Dada and revive it much closer to the original than the popular, but exploiting only the fashionable imagery of the Dadaists and Futurists ART OF NOISE and CABARET VOLTAIRE did." (Needless to say that I am a big fan of Dada too.)
Один из моих любимых релизов Курёхина, к которой не надоедает возвращаться снова и снова. Запись сделана в далеком и еще весьма советском 1985 году - до перестройки! - в коллаборации с Игорем Веричевым и Валерием Алаховым (группа НОВЫЕ КОМПОЗИТОРЫ) в духе соц-арта: это звуковые коллажи из советских радиопередач, театральных спектаклей и кинофильмов с до боли знакомых каждому советскому человеку фразами, интонациями, ритмами и мелодиями. Конечно, советская цензура не одобрила и никогда бы не пропустила подобное издание - виниловая пластинка вышла в Европе в 1987 году... "NME" в рецензии на "Насекомую Культуру" написал, что "ПОПУЛЯРНОЙ МЕХАНИКЕ" удалось проникнуться духом Дада и возродить его гораздо ближе к оригиналу, чем это сделали популярные, но эксплуатировавшие лишь модную образность дадаистов и футуристов ART OF NOISE и CABARET VOLTAIRE". (Надо ли говорить, что я большой фэн и дада тоже?...)
As the disc booklet reports, the main musical instrument used in creation of this work was a studio tape recorder (analogue and pretty primitive one), and the main material was sound recordings archives. Of course, they had no official access to it, and basically were stealing everything and everywhere they could, the plundering of the archives was carried out through acquaintances and was similar to a miracle of randomness. It is also worth keeping in mind that in said years, sampler technology was in its infancy, and this result was achieved with the help of painstaking manual work with tape recorder and film.
Как сообщает прилагаемый к диску буклет, главным музыкальным инструментом при создании этого произведения был студийный магнитофон, а материалом - архивы звукозаписи. Официального доступа у них, разумеется, не было, и грабеж архивов осуществлялся видимо через знакомых и был подобен чуду рандома. Стоит иметь в виду, что в те годы сэмплерная технология находилась в колыбели, и этот результат достигнут при помощи кропотливой ручной работы с довольно примитивным аналоговым магнитофоном и пленкой.
Pop mechanics - Blue blouse (remix)
It is worth noting that the name "Pop Mechanics" was invented specifically to label the 'Insect Culture' release - but everybody enjoyed it so much that later it turned into the musician's trademark. The English publishers, as part of promotional activity, cut up a special dance remix, which was sheduled for 12" single release. Due to financial reasons, it never saw the light of day, but the recording survived time and was included as a bonus track into CD reissue. I am posting it here: 4 minutes of avant-garde and pure dadaism!
Cамо название 'Поп-механика' было придумано чтобы как-то подписать данный релиз, но оказалось столь удачным, что скоро превратилось в торговую марку музыканта. Для продвижения альбома английские издатели изготовили специальный танцевальный ремикс - он планировался для издания на отдельном 12" сингле, но - увы! - ввиду банальных финансовых причин никогда не увидел свет. А запись осталась и появилась в виде бонус-трека на CD-переиздании. 4 минуты авангарда и дадаизма охренительно высокой пробы!

This tune Kuryokhin initially composed for «Mister Designer» movie, but later re-used a lot of times integrating in his other artworks. Unofficial videoclip was compiled from said movie' scenes.
Many of you might have heard this famous tune from 60-es: 'Those were the days', by Mary Hopkin - havent you? Just check this crazy piano + saxophone cover, and you will momentarily get into what was Kuryokhin's genius.

Я уже знакомил вас с творчеством этого музыканта ранее, в #ttt посте №119. Сегодняшний пост будет исключительно про этого замечательного артиста и (в хорошем смысле) музыкального хулигана. Таких, как он, принято называть уважительно "анфан терибль" 😎
Курехин стал одной из самых видных фигур российской андерграундной сцены в 80-е годы. Гениальность мальчика стала видна уже в школе; Курехин двигал карьеру профессионального пианиста и со временем превратился в настоящего виртуоза - однако не смог найти свое место, "встроиться" в официально одобренные структуры. В конце 70-х он успел поиграть в ведущих джазовых коллективах, а потом, когда российский рок испытал стадию бурного роста - успел поиграть в целой куче известнейших рок-групп Санкт-Петербурга. Во второй половине 80-х и начале 90-х он собрал собственный коллектив под названием "Поп-механика" (назвать его чисто "музыкальным" язык не поворачивается) и давал концерты по всему миру. Не будет преувеличением сказать, что со временем он потерял интерес к музыке как жанру искусства (да и к современному искусству в целом, тоже), и 90-е годы увидели его проникновение на телевидение - в роли шоумена, сценариста, участника ток-шоу и политика.
К сожалению, в 96-м году Курехин внезапно умер от редкой болезни. Но за свою недолгую карьеру он успел сделать очень много. Пусть его музыка довольно просто устроена, но - будучи "оплодотворенной" его духом и харизмой, она воспламеняла тысячи людей, и до сих пор остается с нами. Это замечательный пост-модерновый кусок нашей культуры...
