Tempura Day + Día del Tempura [Eng+Spa]

It is a pleasant Sunday night that I have on this January 7th. I'm at home and I haven't had to go out, I cooked during the day and my brother and I have dedicated ourselves to taking care of some things on the computer. There is very little to tell about my #life today. So what it boils down to is that it was a nice day, a little cold, but overall peaceful.

Better let's move on to comment on the anniversary of #History that I chose for today, which is from the area of #food, and in this case, it is of an interesting origin, because although it is noted as a well-known food preparation of the Japanese #cuisine, it happens to have European roots that are related to the commercial contacts developed during the 16th century. Today is 'Tempura Day'.

The history of this food preparation dates back to 1543, when a Chinese ship, heading to Macau, accidentally arrived at the Japanese island of Tanegashima. Three Portuguese merchants were traveling on this ship, who began contacts with Japan, with weapons being their main trade product. That was normal, knowing that the Japanese were in a civil war, and weapons are a precious commodity in times of conflict.

The merchants, Antonio da Mota, Francisco Zeimoto and Antonio Peixoto, saw a great opportunity and took it, creating a new trade route. The relationship was expanded to other products, such as Western soap, tobacco, and some cooking recipes. Among the cooking #recipes was one of using flour and eggs to bathe vegetables and fry in oil, it was the basis of what we know today as #tempura. It seems that the Japanese recipe for this dish was established in Nagasaki, but I'm not sure.

The commercial relationship lasted until 1639, when the Japanese government considered it harmful to continue maintaining it. The issue had a religious overtone, since the problem cited as the cause is Christian proselytism. It was a threat to traditional culture, and furthermore, in a country with a polytheistic tradition, a religion that imposed firm monotheism, it was something very difficult to accept.

By the way, not only does the recipe for this dish have roots outside of Japan, but it also happens that the celebration of the day is not Japanese. The day began to be celebrated as a national day in the United States, a country where the Japanese migrant community, since the 19th century, sought to maintain some basic features of their culture that allowed them to maintain their identity and their roots.

Well, I guess that's all I had to say. Now I'm craving some fried food (personal smile). I hope you are well and that we can read again another time.
