Sugar Cane Day + Día de los Bastones de Azúcar [Eng+Spa]

I am on Tuesday, December 26, it is already night. I'm still trying to get some order in my mind, since I've been having a bit of a disorder in my sleep schedule, and I've been working on various things at night. I hope this situation doesn't get much more complicated for me. I have had, in other respects, a quiet day, with nothing interesting to tell.

Since there is nothing more to tell about my #personal #life, I am going to make comments on the anniversary of the #History that I have reviewed for today. It's about a topic that has to do with #desserts or #sweets that are popular at #Christmas. Today is 'Sugar Cane Day'.

This sugar cane, commonly colored white and red, has a history of several centuries. Although it is a #candy topic, it happens that I am not very clear about it, there are numerous times that the history of a #food is not completely clear, and sometimes the history is intertwined with legends (difficult to verify) or myths (for definition, impossible to verify).

Despite what was said in the previous paragraph, the creation of the first versions of the sugar cane is attributed to the Master of the Choir of the Cologne Cathedral, during the 1670s. It is said that, among the members of the choir, were the White Voices (who are prepubescent children). Such choir members were restless, and boredom during long church services affected their behavior.

I can assure you that boredom can make even the best of children invent something to distract themselves, but that kind of little pranks were unacceptable when they were part of the Cathedral Choir. So, the person in charge of directing them came up with this hard candy to distract them and keep them happy. It is said that since the most complicated services were at Christmas, the priest wanted to give it a color alluding to the liturgy of this part of the year, in addition to giving it the shape of a shepherd's staff, or crook, as an allusion to the shepherds, who worshiped the newborn Jesus in Bethlehem.

Upon further inspection, it appears that much of this origin is legend. Yes, it seems true that sugar canes were distributed at that time in the Cologne Cathedral Choir, but they were candy canes, straight in shape, without coloring and without added flavors. There are records that, when this type of candy began to be produced in the United States, in 1837, they were still straight in shape, but color had been added and mint was added to the sugar to give it the flavor that was traditional for almost 150 years.

This reference to North America, which is from Massachusetts, adds to something else that marks a change in this Christmas candy, which also arrived in the United States (in 1950), when the Catholic priest Gregory Keller, from Georgia, invented a machine (which bears his last name), which allowed us to automate the way of creating this candy and give it the shape of a staff (or J shape, depending on how you look at it). A form that is preserved to this day.

It is interesting to study the evolution of such a simple thing that is so popular. Sometimes you can learn some curious facts. Well, it's time for me to say goodbye, wishing you that you are well, that you enjoy some candy, and that we can read again another time.
