It is the afternoon of Wednesday, December 27. Today we went out to buy some groceries. The weather is at a cool level, it looked like it was going to rain because of the number of clouds in the sky, but it was lucky that it didn't rain while we were shopping. Otherwise, my day has been calm and serene. It's the kind of days I love to have in my #life.
Having so little to talk about my personal affairs, I can share some comments about an anniversary in #History that belongs to today and has a lot to do with various #food traditions for Christmas. Today is 'Fruit Cake Day'.

Es la tarde del día miércoles, 27 de diciembre. Hoy salimos a comprar algunos víveres. El clima está en un nivel fresco, parecía que fuese a llover por la cantidad de nubes en el cielo, pero fue una suerte que no lloviera mientras estábamos haciendo las compras. Por lo demás, mi día ha sido tranquilo y sereno. Es la clase de días que amo tener en mi #vida.
Habiendo tan poca cosa que contar de mis asuntos personales, puedo pasar a compartir unos comentarios sobre una efeméride de la #Historia que pertenece al día de hoy y tiene bastante que ver con varias tradiciones de #comida para las navidades. Hoy es el ‘Día del Pastel de Frutas’.

This dish is something that I remember fondly, there are very different recipes, which depend on the country in which it is made. As I read, the origin of this flour, nuts, and sweet cake dates back to Roman times, but it has evolved over the centuries. I found it quite curious that it was born as a military provision of the Roman legions, it would be the ancient Roman version of the Energy Bars that we know today.
By the way, the addition of honey (and preserved fruits) to the recipe occurred during the Middle Ages. I think that the addition of Rum liqueur to the recipe (which is very typical of this part of the world), was a modification made during the Renaissance, when the conquest of America by different European kingdoms and empires was already in full swing.

Este platillo es algo que recuerdo con cariño, hay muy diversas recetas, que dependen del país en que se elabore. Según leí, el origen de este pastel de harina, frutos secos y dulce, se remonta a la época de Roma, pero ha ido evolucionando a lo largo de los siglos. Me pareció bastante curioso que naciera como una dotación militar de las legiones romana, vendría a ser la versión romana antigua de las Barras Energéticas que conocemos hoy en día.
Por cierto, la adición de miel (y frutas en conserva) a la receta se produjo durante la Edad Media. Creo que el punto de agregarle licor de Ron a la receta (que es muy propia de esta parte del mundo), fue una modificación realizada durante la época del Renacimiento, cuando ya estaba en plena marcha la conquista de América por distintos reinos e imperios europeos.

No tengo claro en qué momento se comenzó a relacionar este #pastel con la #Navidad. Pero, sí hallé referencias de que desde el medioevo se consumía en ceremonias religiosas y bodas. La referencia de que consumiera con preferencia en navidad, parece que comienza a tomar fuerza en el siglo XIX, en la Inglaterra gobernada por la Reina Victoria. Según se registra, a la Reina le gustaba este pastel y se preparaba para las fiestas de fin de año, además de que se instauró como costumbre que el Pastel de Boda de la casa real británica es este tipo de pastel…
Cuando leí lo del Pastel de Bodas, no me lo esperaba, pero lo encuentro interesante.

I remember that I liked to buy slices of this cake when I was a child. I also enjoyed it as an adult, and I have good memories of this dish at the family Christmas table we had at home a few years ago. It's a nice thing to have good memories.

Yo recuerdo que me gustaba comprar rebanadas de este pastel cuando era niño. Lo disfruté también de adulto, y me viene a la memoria buenos recuerdos de este platillo en la mesa navideña familiar que teníamos en casa hace unos años. Es algo lindo tener buenos recuerdos.
