Means of transportation are one of the most important things we have these days. It's easy to get from one place to another quickly and safely. Perhaps because we're so used to it, we don't even realize how incredible it is. Think back to what it was like in the old days, when people traveled with horses and carts, and if they needed to travel from one continent to another, it would be months and months on a ship. We can't deny that means of transportation are one of the best things we have in the modern age! But when we look more closely, there are problems that bother us, and even though it's something that has been made easier in our time, that doesn't mean that it doesn't need to be improved or that it doesn't have negative points.
Here in Brazil, I believe that the biggest problem with transportation is the cost of owning a car. Buying a decent car isn't cheap, it takes years to pay for a car, and no, I'm not talking about a super-luxurious car, I'm talking about any ordinary car, and that's the least of the problems, I won't even mention depreciation. A car requires maintenance, and anything you need will be expensive, whether it's labor or the necessary parts. Fuel is also very expensive, and there are still filling stations that adulterate the quality...
It's not easy to own a car here. The roads aren't bad, well, some are, depending on where you are, but that's not such a problem. At least where I live, this kind of infrastructure has worked well. Having a car is a matter of necessity, comfort, or for those with above-average financial means, because otherwise, having a car is asking for your pocket to bleed. So the best alternative would be to use public transport, right? It's cheap, you don't have to worry about maintenance, taxes or the price of gasoline. Just pay your fare and be happy? No, it's not quite like that.
Public transportation in my city has its good and bad points, and it's basically 100% made up of city buses. This is a very large city, with around 700,000 inhabitants, and it has a good number of lines that cover various parts of the city. But the problem is that, at certain times of the day, demand is very high and the buses are packed, which is very stressful. Traffic makes this situation even worse: lots of cars, lots of buses, and there are times when it seems like we'll be stuck there forever. There are parts of the city that are a real mess and, look, it's not for lack of planning, the city is constantly undergoing infrastructure reforms to improve the flow.
I keep thinking about all these problems related to cost, and there's a greater evil at the root of it, making everything more expensive and making it impossible for many people to own a car without having to sell a kidney. This problem is called tax. Everything car-related is expensive because the government never tires of bleeding people's pockets dry. If there's one way to solve this problem, it's by reducing taxes. We pay more in taxes than for the product itself, nobody can take it any more, and solutions have to be found at some point, and that's what I did to get out of this trap.
To get around all these problems, the alternative I found was to move to the city center. This way, I no longer need a car, I can walk to work and I basically have everything I need close to where I live, without the need for long commutes through the chaotic city. I do spend a little more on renting a house in the city center, but this offsets the costs I would have had with the car and avoids any stress about traffic and peak hours, when the buses are like a sardine can. I think it was the best choice!

Os meios de transporte são uma das coisas mais importantes que temos nos dias de hoje. É fácil ir de um lugar para outro de forma rápida e segura. Talvez, por estarmos tão acostumados, nem percebemos o quanto isso é incrível. Pense em como era antigamente, quando as pessoas se deslocavam com cavalos e carroças, e se precisassem viajar de um continente para outro, seriam meses e meses dentro de um navio. Não podemos negar que os meios de transporte são uma das melhores coisas que temos na era moderna! Mas, quando olhamos mais de perto, existem problemas que nos incomodam, e mesmo sendo algo mais facilitado em nosso tempo, isso não quer dizer que não precisam melhorar ou que não possuem pontos negativos.
Aqui no Brasil, acredito que o maior problema do transporte é o custo de se ter um carro. Adquirir um carro decente não é algo barato, são anos pagando por um automóvel, e não, não estou falando de um carro superluxuoso, estou falando de um carro popular qualquer, e isso é o menor dos problemas, nem vou mencionar a depreciação. Um carro demanda manutenção, e qualquer coisa que você precise, vai custar caro, seja a mão de obra, seja a peça necessária. O combustível também é muito caro, e ainda existem postos de abastecimento que adulteram a qualidade...
Não é fácil possuir um carro aqui. As estradas não são ruins, bem, algumas são, dependendo de onde você esteja, mas isso não é tão problemático. Pelo menos onde moro, esse tipo de infraestrutura tem funcionado bem. Ter um carro é uma questão de necessidade, conforto, ou para quem possui uma condição financeira acima da média, porque, fora isso, ter um carro é pedir para seu bolso sangrar. Então, a melhor alternativa seria utilizar o transporte público, certo? Ele é barato, você não precisa se preocupar com manutenção, com tantos impostos e nem com o preço da gasolina. Apenas pague sua passagem e seja feliz? Não, não é bem assim.
O transporte público da minha cidade tem pontos positivos e negativos, e ele é basicamente 100% feito através de ônibus urbanos. Aqui é uma cidade bem grande, com algo perto de 700 mil habitantes, e possui uma boa quantidade de linhas que cobrem vários pontos da cidade. Mas o problema é que, em determinados períodos do dia, a demanda é muito alta, e os ônibus ficam lotados, o que é bem estressante. O trânsito piora ainda mais essa situação: muitos carros, muitos ônibus, e tem horas que parece que vamos ficar ali para sempre, engarrafados. Há pontos da cidade que são um verdadeiro caos e, olha, não é por falta de planejamento, a cidade está constantemente passando por reformas na infraestrutura para melhorar o fluxo.
Fico pensando em todos esses problemas relacionados ao custo, e há um mal maior que está na raiz, tornando tudo mais caro e impossibilitando que muitas pessoas possam ter um carro sem ter que vender um rim. Esse problema se chama imposto. Tudo relacionado a carro é caro porque o governo não se cansa de sangrar o bolso das pessoas. Se existe uma maneira de resolver esse problema, é reduzindo os impostos. Pagamos mais impostos do que pelo próprio produto, ninguém aguenta mais, e soluções precisam ser tomadas em algum momento, e foi isso que fiz para sair dessa armadilha.
Para driblar todos esses problemas, a alternativa que encontrei foi me mudar para o centro da cidade. Dessa forma, não preciso mais de carro, posso ir para o trabalho caminhando e tenho basicamente tudo de que preciso perto de onde moro, sem necessidade de grandes deslocamentos pela cidade caótica. Eu gasto um pouco mais com o aluguel de uma casa no centro da cidade, mas isso compensa os gastos que eu teria com o carro e evita qualquer tipo de estresse com o trânsito e com os horários de pico, onde os ônibus parecem uma lata de sardinha. Acho que foi a melhor escolha!
