I never thought deep into it until I witnessed it myself some years back, someone becoming addicted to drugs that were once taken for healing. I was told in stories long before then but I thought it was just a cooked up story and it didn't really make sense to me.
Yeah, it doesn't make sense to me because I can't seem to see myself get used to drugs that I dislike taking even when I'm sick. Well, all that changed after an experience I witnessed and I've come to understand that conditions could put one in such that dangerous case... Drug addiction.
Of course, there are many kinds of drugs to get addicted to and many more ways one could get addicted to them. From an experience, giving yourself medication is one way you could get addicted to a kind of drug.
Speaking from my country, it's almost like a normal thing here, to self medicate mainly for the purpose of reducing costs. And some would even go for the herbal treatments (one that is believed to cure more than 10 different illnesses) and say they've treated themselves. While this may work for some, it has brought worse illnesses or even death to some.
Whether herbal or orthodox medications, self medication is always advised against and that is simply because of many possible dangers in it. I've heard of people who lost their lives to overdose while self medicating, most of them are not aware of what some the drugs even works for and some think they know too much.
It's even sad that some doctors have been found sick or almost dead for self medication. Oh yes, they are doctors but not specialists in what they are treating but they feel they don't need the help of other doctors to save themselves, it's sad and kinda bothersome to have doctors with that mindset.
One experience I'll never forget is a lady who visits the hospital where my mum worked some years back, every week for renewal of her medication. She was sick so they prescribed some drugs for her but up till this day, she keeps taking these drugs. All she does is go with the finished drugs and ask for the exact ones even when she was advised to stop taking them.
Well, it is obvious she has gotten addicted and it will take an even longer time for her to stop and overcome it. It may had started in the right way, her getting treated by a doctor's prescription but she got addicted through self medication of the same drugs that was once prescribed.
One guy who walks around mad on the street now also went through the drug addiction thing, he began to show the madness symptoms when they tried to stop him from doing his self medication routine. He was a brilliant person and had a wealthy family but an illness brought about the drugs addiction no one expected and started like a joke.
I've seen cases of self medication causing drug addiction but I know there are other dangers of self medication, the beneficial aspect of it isn't so much worth it.
