I can't remember the last time I listened to music sang in my language, Urhobo. And I'll have foreign music to blame for that, I listen to their songs a lot more and if you ask me about my favourite songs, you'll not find any Urhobo song on the list.
Does this mean I don't like my language songs? Oh not at all, I love them whenever I get a chance to listen to them. They remind me of where I come from, they bring a different vibe and they bring me close to home even though I'm far away.
Music in itself, is amazing how it can be in any language and bring joy to it's listeners. I've always been one to be curious how music sound in the many languages of this world. I've come to love some including my own language but I want to explore more culture by their music.
I am of the tribe, Urhobo that isn't so popular in my country but very well known in Delta state. I had to add this info because I was surprised to find out many people don't know that the tribe exists. Well, we very much exist and it's fascinating that one of our local meals is popular in the country more than the tribe it originated from.
As for our music which is the focus of this post, we have our style of music but not so unique as I've seen in other tribes or maybe other tribes will say ours is unique when they hear it.
The Urhobos are known for their light beats in their music. Back in the days, they use empty cups and spoons to make their beats and sing to it. They enjoyed their music that way for a long while until they upgraded to creating their own musical instruments to make more beautiful sounds.
I'm not familiar with the names they call the instruments but they are very proud wherever they are to use them. Urhobos are not popular but they are good dancers especially to their own music, you'll hardly hear an urhobo song that you can't vibe to, they make sure to make their music that way.
But recently, they've been going the modern way of music and bringing in the foreign style into Urhobo music which is drawing just anyone into it to listen. Here is a perfect example of our tribe song but with an English instrument.
This guy is popular among our tribe people and others, he is known to always bring in the feelings into whatever he sings. I'd like you to listen to this cover song he did of some of our tribes best songs. Before I started to write this post, I decided to search for a song to recommend and I was a little surprised I could sing these songs so well even though it's been a while I listened to any.
Music in the style of my culture isn't same as in the old days but the language in the music has preserved the culture till date. Music is welcomed in any part of the world but I'm proud to be a part of a culture that carries music high in their language especially with the joy they get in singing them.
Maybe I should prepare an urhobo song to do a cover of it on Hive hehe.
