After having been all over the place for so long, I noticed that almost everywhere I went there is a hill with a cross on it. It seems that putting up this religious symbol is part of every small town or village I have been to, and I think this could be true for many places in the world. While I was in Catamarca, on a random walk while trying to fill my afternoon with something to do, I came across the Cerro de la Cruz of this place. According to the map it looked close by, so I thought, why not visit it 😃?
Después de haber estado tanto tiempo por todos lados, me di cuenta de que en casi todos los lugares a los que fui existe un cerro con una cruz. Parece que poner este símbolo religioso es parte de cada pequeña ciudad o pueblo en el que estuve, y creo que esto podría ser así en muchos lugares en el mundo. Mientras estuve en Catamarca, en un paseo random mientras trataba de llenar mi tarde con algo para hacer, me encontré sin querer con el Cerro de la Cruz de este lugar. Según el mapa se veía cerca, así que pensé, ¿por qué no visitarlo 😃?
The city of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca has several beautiful places to explore. I liked the fact that many of them could be reached by public transport, so I often took the opportunity to visit them. I found this city to be quite calm and relaxed, unlike Buenos Aires where everyone is always rushing around. While I was taking my walks, any day in the afternoon seemed like a quiet Sunday, so it was ideal for walks 😃.
La ciudad de San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca tiene varios rincones hermosos para ir a explorar. Me gustaba que a muchos de ellos se podía llegar en transporte público, por lo que muchas veces aproveché la oportunidad para ir a conocerlos. Esta ciudad me pareció bastante tranquila y relajada, a diferencia de Buenos Aires en donde todos siempre están a las corridas. Mientras daba mis paseos, cualquier día a la tarde parecía un domingo tranquilo, por lo que era ideal para hacer paseos 😃.
After several days, I had already managed to catch the buses that went to all ends of the city. Most of them didn't go very long distances, they stayed within the city centre limits but still got close enough to the mountains to go around them a bit. On one of the trips I made, I went to the area of the stadium and the fairgrounds, where just the month before, in July, the great ‘poncho’ festival had been held. At the time of my walk, there were no more traces of all those tourists and the area was deserted again 😅.
Después de varios días, ya había logrado tomarme los colectivos que iban para todos los extremos de la ciudad. La mayoría de ellos no hacían recorridos muy largos, se mantenían dentro de los límites del centro urbano pero igualmente se acercaban lo suficiente a las montañas como para recorrerlas un poco. En uno de los paseos que hice fui a la zona del estadio y del predio ferial, en donde justamente el mes anterior, en julio, se había llevado a cabo el gran festival del "poncho". Al momento de mi caminata, ya no quedaban rastros de todos esos turistas y la zona estaba desierta de nuevo 😅.
A short distance away from the fairgrounds, you can find a small area of bush with some trekking trails to do. That day I hadn't gone prepared with the idea of doing any long hikes, I just wanted to visit the Casa de La Punta and its vicuña weaving exhibition, but I went prepared with my hiking shoes anyway. The walk to the Casa de La Punta was much shorter than I thought it would be, so when I finished I still had many hours of daylight ahead of me 😃.
Alejándose unas 5 cuadras del predio ferial, se puede encontrar una pequeña zona de monte con algunos senderitos de trekking para hacer. Ese día no había ido preparada con la idea de hacer ninguna caminata larga, solo quería visitar la Casa de La Punta y su exposición de tejidos de vicuña, pero igualmente fui preparada con mis zapatos de montaña. El paseo a la Casa de La Punta fue mucho más corto de lo que creí, por lo que al terminar todavía tenía muchas horas de luz por delante 😃.
Browsing a bit on the map, I saw that nearby there was a small hill with a 20 minute walk from where you could get a good view of the valley. I had the time to do it, so I went to investigate a bit. The trail was short, but equally rustic mountain trail so I was glad I had my proper footwear. Besides, the day was fine to be outside, so it was a good plan to keep getting some air 😃.
Navegando un poco en el mapa, ví que cerca de ahí había un pequeño cerro con una caminata de unos 20 minutos desde donde se podía obtener una buena vista del valle. Tenía el tiempo para hacerlo, así que fui a investigar un poco. El sendero era corto, pero igualmente rústico de montaña así que me alegré de tener mi calzado adecuado. Además, el día acompañaba como para estar afuera, así que era un buen plan seguir tomando un poco de aire 😃.
What was promised in the Google reviews was true: you could get a good view from there. Although this hill was not very high, as the city is quite flat you could see a lot. I was a bit amused to find once again a ‘ Cross Hill’ on my trip, because it's not the first one I've seen. There was also a hill with a cross in Esquel, in El Bolsón, in San Luis, and now also in Catamarca. I guess this gives identity to the mountains and makes them stand out, even if it is with something. Is there a Cross Hill near your home 😅?
Lo prometido en las reseñas de Google era cierto: se podían obtener unas buenas vistas desde allí. A pesar de que este cerro no tenía gran altura, como la ciudad es bastante plana se podía ver bastante. Me causó un poco de gracia encontrar una vez más un "Cerro de la Cruz" en mi viaje, porque no es el primero que veo. También había un cerro con una cruz en Esquel, en El Bolsón, en San Luis, y ahora también en Catamarca. Supongo que esto le da identidad a las montañas y las destaca aunque sea con algo. ¿Cerca de tu casa hay algún Cerro de la Cruz 😅?
All in all, I ended up getting a lot more out of this afternoon than I had intended. Exploring this part of the city of Catamarca was good for me, and with this walk I had almost gone in all directions within this area. When I arrived in the capital of the province I didn't have many expectations about what to do, but the plans came spontaneously, and also thanks to the information I got from the locals and the tourist information centres. I highly recommend visiting this province if you have the possibility, and if you like to collect hikes to hills with crosses, there is one here too 😅.
Al final de cuentas, terminé aprovechando esta tarde mucho más de lo que había pensado. Explorar esta parte de la ciudad de Catamarca fue bueno para mí, y con este paseo ya casi había ido en todas direcciones dentro de esta área. Cuando llegué a la capital de la provincia no tenía muchas expectativas sobre qué hacer, pero los planes fueron surgiendo espontáneamente, y también gracias a que me informé con locales y en los centros de información turística. Recomiendo mucho visitar esta provincia si se tiene la posibilidad, y si te gusta coleccionar caminatas a cerros con cruces, en este lugar también hay uno 😅.
