The call that spoiled everything

in The Ink Well2 months ago

Sunday morning came with just the expected feeling Ezekiel had imagined on Saturday night before he went to sleep. He had hoped for the restoration of electricity within the night for him to iron his church dress which he was using as a determinant to attend church that Sunday but all through the night there wasn't electricity.
He got up from bed around 6:00 am, he picked up his phone, brought out the roughened long-sleeve shirt he was to use for church, and flashed his phone's torch light on it and the light exposed deeply the roughness of the clothes.
"Mtchwww!" He let out a long hiss, threw the shirt back inside the wardrobe, jumped on his bed and his mind excitedly assured him,
"Church is cancelled for the day."

As he lay on the bed, numerous judging thoughts began to fight his once happy mind and he found himself so restless. He tried to focus on watching funny clips on TikTok but no way. All through, his mind was urging him to get up and prepare for church and use any of his casual clothes for the church since the one he wanted to use was roughened.

"No way, I can't wear any of those shirts to church" A bigger thought arrested his mind and he lay more relaxed on the bed.

Just 25 minutes to 7:00 a.m., his phone rang with a number not saved, he contemplated picking up and letting the ringing drop without answering the call. The call came again, he picked up and heard a feminine voice,
"Hello, Ezekiel are you home? I'm coming over"
The voice wasn't familiar to him, he stayed silent for some seconds to try to recognise the voice but he couldn't fathom who could be the person that wanted to come and meet him in the early hours of Sunday.

"Good morning, please who is...?"

"Ye! Yeeey! Yeeey!" He screamed as he staggered to catch his phone that slipped off his hand which interrupted his question to the lady on the phone and unfortunately, he couldn't catch it and saw his phone landed on the floor with a cracky noise like that of a glass falling to the ground.

He rushed to pick it up and he muttered a hiss immediately he noticed that the screen had broken. He pressed the power button hoping for the phone to come up but no way. He tried many times, pressed the power button with force out of frustration but it still didn't come up.

Even though it was morning time with cold weather, sweat soaked his body, and he had to walk out of his house to the compound premises.

"Haaaa! You're still around, no church today?" His neighbour Philomena, who was rushing off to church saw him and asked while fast-walking out of the compound.

"Good morning. I will go" Ezekiel replied in a disappointing tone while glued to his phone trying to revive it.

"What kind of bad luck is this this morning?" He disappointedly asked aloud to the space in the compound while pressing the power button so hard and waving the phone in the air to receive a miracle but the more he did, the more dead and silent the phone remained.
On the spot, his anger increased the moment he remembered the call that caused his phone to fall. He still hasn't known the person who called and there's no way for him to find out because his phone is dead and blank. He sluggishly walked inside, with his heart boiling with anger patiently waiting for the lady who spoiled his phone with the call.

He threw the phone on table and lay on the bed with his face facing up and began to reflect on how everything happened in a flash, he didn't know whether to blame the devil for manipulating him into not going to church or the girl who called his phone which was the moment that changed everything.
He was in bed till around 9:00 am when he decided to go out to see if he could repair the phone but unfortunately, all the phone repairer's shop was closed. He gave up after going from one area to the other.

The remaining part of the Sunday was moody for him, he hissed all through, appetite was lost and anger was at the centre of his heart hoping that the lady that called him would show up but no way.
The next day, he succeeded in repairing the phone with N33,000. After the phone was back to normal, he went to his call log to pick up the number of the person who called but unfortunately, his phone was flashed via the repair process and no record was found. He sighed and accepted his fate.
The whole thing was a mystery to him because the lady that called him never showed up. He tagged the occurrence to be God's act of punishing him for accepting not to go to church that Sunday.

Thanks for reading.

He should figure out who called him after fixing the phone because I will definitely collect some of the repair fee, just kidding

I don't believe not going to church caused it and could have been more with the phone. 33,000 is a whole lot of money in this economy, 😂.

The person that called him should never show up because if she does, it's not going to be funny at all😅.

I don't believe not going to church caused it and could have been more with the phone.

I once had a similar experience and I didn't think it much, I just believed it's my punishment 😅

Ezekiel sure got a nasty surprise 😉....... The strange call offered a piece of much-needed light-hearted mystery. Keep it up 👍

Yeah, the strange call remained a mystery to him.
Thank you so much bro

A story that has a touch of mystery. Who was the woman and if that was really a punishment for not going to church?, many questions that may not have answers. What is true is that the repair of the phone was very expensive.

Thanks for sharing your story with us.
Good day.
