Family is the basic unit of society. Every family follows various values, norms, rituals and traditions. When deciding should old people be taken to retirement homes or taken care by family members the impact of family values can't be ignored.

The term "Nuclear Family" is very popular nowadays which defines the family that consist on husband, wife and their children.

Did you notice elders of the family i.e parents of the couple and grandparents of the children have space?

You may have uncountable of arguments for your stance but for these arguments are just excuses i.e

Who will take care of them at home?

The presence of elders spoil your relationship with your better half or husband.

I remember a man in my neighborhood left her old mother on the footpath because her presence in house spoil his wife mood. That was a heart breaking incident I witnessed and condemned.

My Grandma told me a story in my childhood,

There was a young man name Arif who was cruel to his father. He decided to leave his father alone in the forest and never turn back to him. Next day, Arif along with his old father went to forest and found his son following him. Arif left his father and begin to walk back to home with his son, when the boy said, "Dad I will also leave you here when you get old." Arif realized his mistake and he apologize from his old father.

That's not a story but the family values that I taught from my elders. I'm a Muslim Alhamdulila and in my religion elders/parents hold sacred place. It is human obligation to serve parents and elders of the family.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized the immense reward for serving one’s parents,

“The pleasure of the Lord lies in the pleasure of the parent. The anger of the Lord lies in the anger of the parent.”

I know retirement homes are well organized institution where individual are offered care 24/7 by the professionals but these institution doesn't guarantee emotional support as family.

The day I lost my Grandma I feel like there was no kindness around me.

Living with family provides emotional support, compassion, guidance, wisdom and kindness. If you're Muslim, you have some obligations towards your elders. Honor you elders, be kind to them and enjoy the shadow of their prayers.

This blog is my submission to Hive Learners Weekly Featured Content topic "Retirement Homes Or With Family?" week 144 and edition 02.

That's all for today's blog!

I very much agree with your values and what the prophet says, even though at some point in my life I was Catholic for many years.

I believe that respect is owed to older people, for their knowledge, their experience and for being the ones who educate the new generations in all the traditions and everything beautiful about family union.

I agree with you that in care institutions, or being with a nurse, it will never be the same, they will not be given the love they need from a family.

I liked your way of writing, I congratulate you and you have earned my respect.

Children should care for their old parents and make sure they do not suffer, and they'll be rewarded for promptly carrying out their responsibility. Well-written.
