RE: Two Examples of "Ablenkung" (Distraction / Deflection) in Chess

in The Chess Community23 days ago

Okay, here's the solution to the "Wie würden Sie spielen?" problem #1:

First a photo of the problem set up on my board, last night:

AblenkungWieWurdenSieSpielen1.jpg

This ending was actually played by Bobby Fischer in 1970:

WasWurdenSieSpielen1b.jpg

① Black moves his Queen to d4 to check White's King.

② White's King is forced to move to h1, where he no longer defends the Rook on f1. (If instead, Rf2, then Black plays ... Re1#.)

③ Now Black plays Queen to f2! If the White Rook takes the Queen, Black simply brings his e8 Rook to e1 to force checkmate.

Here is the notation:

  1. ... Qd4+
  2. Kh1 Qf2!
    If 3. Qb5, then 3. ... Re1 follows.

White therefore resigned.
(Reshevsky vs Fischer, Palma de Mallorca, 1970).

A nice example of Ablenkung at its finest.
