What happened in crypto the past 3 weeks? Bitcoin is reaching ATH after ATH testing $100K. And its ETFs are doing great also, getting close to the Gold total value. The SEC CEO, Gary Gensler is out of business on January 20. Coinbase is looking for its own products, sneakily delisting its competitors. What else? Read below:
- Bitcoin: BTC ETF options will soon be ready on BlackRock Bitcoin ETF. MicroStrategy got another 51780 BTC for $4.6B, pushing it on ready on BlackRock Bitcoin ETF. Well, Bitcoin ETFs just hit $138B in assets, which is a new record! With $100B just in the US, they are getting close to the Gold ETF value of $120B. MicroStrategy got another 51780 BTC for $4.6B pushing above the 1% of all the BTC that will ever exist. Yet, MicroStrategy stock went down by more than 16%, all while BTC was testing the $100K. With the value passing through the $94K mark, testing the $100K, there is hope for the crypto future. And now is pulling back, with $93,137.20 right now. What do you think, we may see the fated $100K by the end of the year?
- Ethereum: The SEC hit pause again on Franklin Templeton's Bitcoin-Ethereum ETF to January 2025. Grayscale completed a reverse share executing a 1:5 split on the Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF, and a 1:10 split on the Ethereum Mini Trust ETF. Monad begins the testnet rollout, optimizing ETH's architecture for a higher throughput. Hong Kong's ZA Bank has expanded its services to allow retail users to buy and sell BTC and ETH using fiat currency.
- Altcoins and stablecoins: When a16z sent a message on X for the DAO run by an AI agent, Eliza, it surged 50%. Is that right? Bonk is once again the top memecoin on Solana. Dogecoin went suddenly up with Bitcoin surging, then promptly back, making some people lose fortunes on short bets. Floki went up before the Coinbase listing, making it a funny week overall for the memecoins. Coinbase Wallet introduced a 4.7% APY on the USDC balances. Magic Eden revealed tokenomics for an upcoming ME token, allocating 12.5% for airdrops. Hyperliquid also has some additional activity-based airdrop points for Q4 users. Solana surged past $260, as institutional moved to launch spot SOL ETFs. Bitwise has moved towards launching a spot Solana ETF. XRP surged 25% after the SEC chair announced his resignation.
- NFTs and blockchain games: On Splinterlands, we are getting ready for a new card collection, with some cool summoners that are now auction-only, yet it seems quite expensive. - Good news: Gary Gensler will step down on January 20, as Trump will have his inauguration. Yet, he may still play some dodgy moves before leaving, I bet! What will happen next, the expectancies are high, as the SEC has received a record $8.2B in financial remedies in 2024? Kucoin has a brilliant referral program if you are good at this stuff. Centralized exchange volumes surged 19% in October. Howard Lutnick, CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald and vocal Bitcoin supporter, was named as Trump's pick for Commerce Secretary.
- Bad news: Coinbase was accused of an anti-competitive move in the wrapped BTC market, by Bit Global, as they conveniently de-listed wBTC in December, and launched its own product, cbBTC, right after, holding $1.5B in TVL right now, compared with wBTC $14B. They swear that all is just a big fat coincidence. WBTC did drop briefly to $5200 on Binance, due to an electronic trading error. But Bit Global custody structure has shifted across multiple jurisdictions, raising governance issues. Did someone at Binance activate the dump and pump button too early by mistake? South Korea is planning to impose a 20% crypto tax in 2025.
- Joke of the week: Known online as Razzlekhan, Heather Morgan was writing about cybercrime prevention, while simultaneously helping to launder 120.000 BTC through coin mixers and darknet markets, with her husband being the mastermind behind the infamous Bitfinex $10.2 billion hack. She got 18 months, while her husband got 5 years in prison.
