The COVID19 has changed the world in many ways. The one big change was that the people more health conscious and the second was the way people worked. Before the Covid19 the most of the people worked in the office and when the Covid19 virus breakout the company give the provision of work for home for their employees. This was adopted by most of the companies except the essential services. I am a design engineer and most of the work get uploaded in the SAP system that is the reason we do not have the work for home facility in past so company made a roaster and we were working like two days a week (from office only). I do not have any experience of working for home but if I get the chance to work form Home then what I will choose? I try to answer this question with explanation and reasons.
The work form home has their on advantage and th disadvantage for individual as well as to the company itself. Lets have a look at the individual level advantage. The very first is the time saving specially for the people who travelled a significant distance every day. I know some of my colleagues how traveling for more then hour time each side, which means more then two hours a day. Think for the advantage for those people, they can spend more quality time with family or give this time for some activity they love too. The other aspects is the cost, obviously the traveling also cost which is dent in the pocket. So no traveling means more time for ourselves as well as saving of money. One of the big relief for the daily long travelers. In India the road conditions and the driving sense make the traveling more unconscious also and some time causes the major accident. So it's safe also when we travelled less. Those are the two direct effect on employee and other then this is the work time flexibility and comfortable work zone. When I am working from home then I can create my own work space as per my requirement and wishes. It can be a working table or a couch or even my bedroom. Their will be no requirement of to be professionalism in workplace, I can design it as I want, which give the happiness to ourselves. Their will be no need to follow the strict timing and attendance punching as along with work form home companies also provide the flexible timing. I do no have to think of attire I wear everyday for office. I can work in my home dress which can be a night suit also.
Ultimately I love to work form home for the better work life balance, flexible timing, to spend more time with family which helps in reducing the over all mental stress.
On the other side their are some disadvantage also. If you work in a company which exploit the workers then the work form home can be a big punishment for some one. Specially in the India where the companies are taking maximum out of workers the work form here is advantageous for them. In a idle condition the work for home is more work life balance approach but in reality its some thing opposite to idle conditions. Form the bosses the work form home means the employees are available 24x7 and they can assign the work anytime and that leads to the extended working hours. On onw side the employee was expecting the free time for family but on other side the extended work timing tells another story. I have seem many of my friend were frustrated form work form home because of such incidents. It like they are working all time and their is noting like me time.
As a social person we meet many people on daily basis even when we are on work. The physical meeting with others make us more socialize and its lacking in case of the work form home. The online meeting are one choice, when we want to discuss or have any review meeting but the are not as effective as the physical meetings.
Site work is more rewarding also most of the time. The companies give some extra salary in the form of perks for the employees working away form the family. On one side its good chance o earn some extra bucks but some one has to choose between extra earnign vs working away from family.
I love to work form home if I am part of a company which give preference to the employees wellbeing and choices and do not want the option in the company management is completely the money mined or oriented.
