Where?

It's a vague question that could relate to anything and depending on what could be answered differently however it's a question I was asked a few days ago, and I'll be honest, it was really difficult to answer. Where has been your favourite outdoor destination in all your travels and where would you go back to? Yeah, that's not something I could answer easily because there's been so many and each has their own unique attractions.

I've travelled extensively and been to so many amazing places so answering that question with only one answer seems an exercise in futility. There's so many different options to sift through although I believe I can narrow it down to a single theme and that is natural places.

This doesn't mean I don't like visiting cities and all they hold, it's just that I feel more alive I suppose, more connected to the world around me that sustains my life, when I'm in natural places. I gravitate towards such places no matter what country I'm in...it's nature that draws me in.

One of those places I felt most comfortable was the South Island of New Zealand. This doesn't mean it was my favourite place, just that I felt really comfortable and happy there, found sparsely populated wide open spaces - only one quarter of the five million people in the country live on the south island - fresh air, amazing views and peace and quiet. Would I go back? Yes, I would and I will! I think something that draws me there also is that it's only about six hours by air from where I live in Australia and that I speak their language (English) except without the weird accent they have - If you've been there you'll know what I'm talking about.

So, I'd not go as far as saying it's my absolute favourite place but it's right up there...with so many other places and I'll go back there, just like I'll go back to other places as well. I'm also not saying that I don't love visiting cities because I do, but places like this are special and they make me feel small in comparison to the world around me and I love that.

What about you? Where is the best country or location you've been to in which you found an amazing natural place, felt small but connected to the planet and would go back to? Feel free to comment if you'd like to.

Weird accent? I've visited both Australia and New Zealand and couldn't tell the difference between the OZ and the Kiwi accents. Fair dinkum!

Nah, it's way different, similar in some respects but side by side there's a big difference.

When I went to Ireland I actually couldn't tell the difference between the Irish accent and the English accent to be honest. Funny huh?

Ok, that never happened at all, one can easily tell the difference. Leprechauns can be a bugger to understand though. ☺️

I would say Roma!

Yep, I've been to Rome too, it's a great spot.

I have the exact same problem. I've visited many countries and can't compare them—Japan has kind people, Alaska has amazing nature, Vanuatu best fishing in the world and so on. I grew up in New Zealand and have seen both the North and South Islands. I can definitely say that the South Island is where I'd spend more time—Nelson, Stewart Island, and Dunedin are just very beautiful places. I can't agree on the accent, I've been all around Australia, and you guys have the weird accent, not us.

Life is better on the South island for sure, and amazing place.

I didn't know you were a kiwi...but I'm glad someone picked up on the accent comment. You know how it is with Australians and New Zealanders...got to have dig where possible.

Yes, I know how it is. Australians are good cunts.

Not what I expected in reply, but yeah, it's been said a time or two.

The North Island in the New Zealand! Lots of mountains, craters, big lakes, etc. The scenery is just another level.

I've heard it is good, more populated though so I went for the less-populated option when I was over there. I'll be back though so will spend time on the north island too.

I like to find a pleasant place in nature near the city where I live. When I say, nearby, I mean that there will be no need to travel by plane or drive all day.
There, for a few hours, I have natural beauties on all sides of the world that can be enjoyed.
As a child, I went with the school on an excursion to Tara (See my earlier post: Tara National Park - two in one: the "Banjska stena" viewpoint and the "Mitrovac na Tari" resort, so you can get an impression of what I'm writing about ).
Years later I longed to visit that place again and when I arrived, took off my sneakers and put my bare feet on the thick grass, all the stress from my body disappeared.
When the birds chirped, I thought, a real heavenly place.
If someone asked me: "If you could choose, where would you like to end your life's adventure?"
I would choose this place.

It sounds like a great spot and somewhere I'd like a lot myself. Also, what a view in that image!

Oh I have been to some amazing places, got to explore so much natural beauty. It would be very hard for me to choose. If I could pick two, it would be the first jungle I visted, it was in Palenque, Mexico, I got so emotionally when I visited there. It was early morning and I was greeted by the most majestic trees, cloaked in a low mist and the sound of Howler monkeys calling out in the trees. Or it would be Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, It's not a natural lake. But the sky stretched forever, and the wildlife I saw was insane. xxx

I think the place itself doesn't matter so much, it's how you feel there which makes the place...well, matter. You know what I mean? Any place that makes us want to go back because of good feelings, memories and so on...is a place worthy of returning to.

Yes for sure, it is that feeling. I had to sit down when I took my first step in the jungle, I got so overwhelmed by it all, I actually cried. What an amazing world we live in xxx

It is indeed, if only everyone treated it better.

Each a different experience, highlights I would visit Sweden, Norway for similar reasons to South Island New Zealand you enjoyed, cities some were of great interest, preference is to remote spaces.

Africa, I would love to visit Victoria Falls once again, feel the power of nature!

Mountains and seas throughout our land and adjacent countries have plenty on offer, wish I owned a 4x4 when younger to explore more remote places.

Having a 4x4 means accessing places many others cannot and I like that; In South Africa, and here as well, I think a 4x4 is essential to see the best bits.

We took sedan car on some exceptional journeys only a handful of folk had 4x4's unlike today where many are able to afford them.

Yeah, and most people who have 4x4's these days have no clue how to use them.

You got that right, more of a status symbol....

My answer would probably vary depending on what I did in the past year. This year it would definitely be heading out to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Before that, it probably would have been the Marquette area in Michigan's upper peninsula. I think like you though all of my favorite places are definitely somewhere with a lot of natural wonder. Places we have camped or hiked.

I've not been to the Rocky Mountains but it seems like the sort of place I'd like from what I know about the region.

Yeah, I think you would dig it.

I have obviously never travelled out of my country before and I just wrote in my last post that I would love to visit Canada someday. However, I have visited several places in Nigeria here and the place I would obviously be visiting again was the beach at Lagos. It had a very cool atmosphere and a nice view that I wish I never left the place when I visited.

The beach is always enjoyable...except sand, that stuff gets everywhere!

I hope you get to travel abroad someday, it's a big world out there.

I get your take with the sand but I found it enjoyable during my time as I dipped my legs in the sand and waited for the water to flow towards my direction 😅. I know it's a big wolrd out there and that's why I would love to explore and visit those places. I guess it's just about time and money. Thanks galen

Hi Galen, the question immediately suggested an answer: the Madrid mountains. It is a place with nothing particular, except that in that place was very special during my adolescence. I remember wonderful moments with my first love. It is a place I can no longer return to

About a place I can go back to, and connect with something special, I think the Swiss Alps or the Austrian Alps in spring or summer, are places I will visit again. They have a very special energy.

Mountains, I love going there especially if it's somewhere remote enough to dissuade others from making the effort.

I've had some experience with the Swiss and Austrian Alps so have to agree with you, amazing.

Yes, they are amazing places. Rocks, clean air, water and light. The four elements.

Perfect!

It must be really beautiful the place you mention, especially because of the natural space, in those places I feel peace, I connect better with myself and there is another energy, one that man has not polluted.

I haven't really travelled, only from my hometown to here. From Argentina the natural place I liked the most was El Pinar where my best friend lives.

From here, the beach peñon del cuervo and the botanical garden, and the forest la victoria. They are beautiful places!

Good night to you!

I hope you get to travel the world someday, there are some spectacular places to see and I think you'd be the sort of person to appreciate them.

I would appreciate it for sure, every detail is important. Time will tell, he is wise, while I work to make it happen.
It's strange but every day I feel more and more at one with nature... and it feels beautiful.

Hi!
Like you my friend I adore being in nature. So much so I choose to live deeply amongst it. My closest neighbors are owls and if I sit in an apartment I find I always sit by a window and can't wait to get outside again!
But I feel blessed although I've traveled a bit I've been lucky enough to spend a few months in southern Africa. And canoeing for four days down the mighty Zambezi river was the best experience of my life so far!

Canoeing on the Zambezi seems like a great time, well done and hopefully you can arrange another adventure soon.
