As far as work ethic goes, I'd say I'm right up there meaning I work hard and consistently towards what I need to achieve; slacking off isn't my way and it just doesn't feel right and, besides that, everything great that I've achieved has come through the application of effort (and other things of course) so it seems legit...but having said all that I've been known to burn the candle at each end and push myself too hard for too long and while sustainable for a time it eventually catches up. These days I try to find a little more balance where possible so take a day off now and then which often involves doing nothing except enjoyable things that make me happy...that's how it should be right?
I had yesterday off work and managed to not look at my work phones or computers for the whole day and well into the evening. (Ok, I looked once or twice but didn't action anything.) It was a nice day off...but I was still on.
The problem with working so much professionally is that all the other things that need doing in one's personal life still occur but tend to mount up so while being off work I was still very much on, meaning still working, albeit on things in my personal life that required my attention.
This is what the day looked like:
- 05:45: Wake up, went for a run came home and showered.
- 07:30: Headed to the the blood collection clinic to have some taken for testing (I had to fast all night prior so had to do it early.
- 08:30: Home for breakfast, scrambled eggs, bacon and coffee.
- 09:15: In the car to the roller door place to grab two additional remote controls.
- 09:45: Bunnings, a huge hardware store chain, for cutting discs, a padlock and liquid nails.
- 09:55: Ignored a work call.
- 10:30: A podiatrist appointment.
- 10:10: Ignored a work call.
- 11:30: Home to code in the roller door remotes I'd bought and to have lunch. I finished off the last forty five minutes of a movie I'd started two weeks earlier over lunch + ignored a work call.
- 13:00: Drove to one of my other houses to load up a trailer with stuff to take to the dump.
- 14:15: Dropped the trailer back and assessed an electrical job at that same house and spoke to an electrician.
- 15:00: Appointment with a chap in respect of my kitchen renovations.
- 15:30: Fucken housework.
- 15:50: Ignored a work call.
- 16:15: Watering in the garden, (snuck a coffee in too).
- 18:00: Started dinner...Burritos y'all!
- 18:20: Ignored a work call.
- 19:00: Some stuff I'm not telling you about.
- 20:45: Grabbed a coffee and sat on the lounge to watch a few Special Ops: Lioness episodes.
- 23:45: Shower and bed...and some more stuff I'm not telling you about.
I'll admit that there wasn't a huge amount of physical work in the day but it was a pretty full day and a long way from sitting around on the couch doing nothing and by the end of the day it was nice to shut my eyes and find some sleep which I guess would have been 01:00...with another 05:45 wake up call not far off.
My life always seems to be full of stuff and it's easy to feel overloaded but I have the ability to be off when I'm off and on when I'm on, I guess that means I know how to be present and get the most of the time I spend whether it's working professionally, having days off where I don't do much or those that are busy...being present in each moment gets the best out of life.
What do your days look like when you take one off work? Do you always have loads of stuff to do or are you able to do very little, relaxation and enjoyment type things? Feel free to let me know in the comments if you'd like.
