In a vegetable garden, whatever its type, there are three fundamental factors for its good development. The sun, the soil and the water. Water is a determining factor that works miracles in our vegetable gardens. If you have quality water and in abundance it is very difficult to fail. Unfortunately for me, the water in my area is a scarce product and contains a lot of lime so it is not of great quality. This means that you have to work harder to have a good harvest.

If you do not have quality water and it does not rain much, you have to use your imagination. Mulching is a cultivation technique that works very well and is really cheap to do.
Making mulch is very simple. It involves using waste from the garden itself or from your surroundings. Such as straw, dry leaves or shredding pruning remains. All of them avoiding the presence of weed seeds.
Applying it is also extremely simple. You simply cover the area you want to mulch with a thick layer of about 3 centimetres thick. You do not compact it or anything like that, just cover the area.
What benefits does it have? Many. The most important is the reduction in watering volume and frequency. It will also regulate evaporation and our plants will make better use of the water. It will reduce the temperature of the soil making it more stable which will reduce water stress. On the other hand, it will prevent the appearance of weeds that compete with our vegetables.
Lastly, mulching will also serve to fertilize the soil at the end of the season. Simply by wrapping it with soil it will integrate and improve subsequent harvests.
