How to ruin a beautiful church - Igreja Italiana de Nossa Senhora do Loreto

Igreja Italiana de Nossa Senhora do Loreto 2.jpg

Here comes another little gem found quite by mistake. I went to see a different church that I had wanted to photograph for ages (and I did, but photos suck, so I will have to repeat it) and was already on my way back home when I passed an interesting door. My curiosity always wins, so I got in...

And wow!

Igreja Italiana de Nossa Senhora do Loreto

Church of Our Lady of the Loreto of the Italians

There is not so much gold as in the one I blew up shooting, but the warm stone around, carvings, and large paintings make it quite stunning.

Like many Lisbon churches it had a quite rough history.

Here are few facts:

1518 - Church of Loreto was erected
1651 - Fire with serious destruction.
1676 - Completion of the reconstruction. 12 statues of the Apostles, dozens of paintings and precious marbles were imported from Genoa.
1755 - Earthquake and fire heavily damaged the Church.
1785 - End of reconstruction. The twelve paintings of the Apostles in the niches are by Cirillo Wolkmar Machado.
1792 - The celebration of Sunday Mass at 1 pm begins, which continues to this day.
1862 - Rector Peragallo, born in Chiávari, introduces chairs for the faithful, an absolute novelty in Portugal.

Every corner of it is absolutely beautiful.

And then someone has this lovely idea to put a huge ugly-ass lamp. I think it was the first time I saw something like that. Big, black oval right in your face. Yes - the stunning ceiling is very well lit (and what a ceiling it is!), but there are other, less disturbing ways to do it that other places practice, and it works too.

So ugly!
I tried to avoid it on the photos somehow, but it was nearly impossible if I wanted to catch lurcher areas.

How to enjoy the view with this thing hanging there?

Besides the extra annoying lamp there were some preparations going on, and I didn't want to disturb too much. I missed the shot of the sides so borrowed it. But I will come back there one of these days to see it again. Hopefully with less people around and my phone charged (it takes better pictures in dark places than the camera and has wider angle than the lens I use 🤷‍♀).

Beautiful entrance with stairs (which I did not forget to shoot this time). There is also a since one that I entered with, but this one is much prettier. Again, the amount of tourists at that time... They were everywhere!

And in case you want to go and have a look, here it is. Stuck between some regular buildings:

Wow, great accidental discovery. I love when that happens. I agree about the oval shaped light fitting, talk about ruining the ancient look and feel of the place.

And to think how many places like that I have passed and didn't even think to go in. Yet :p

OMG!... That lamp designer must be a perfect art hater! :)... How could they put that oval thing there??... It looks like a UFO!.... But this new architectural/artistic jewel that you show us today, is still beautiful and -surely- someone will decide to remove the hideous lamp (let's pray for that)... Excellent article as always dear @ewkaw friend... Thanks for sharing!

😂😂

Well.. I hope they remove it eventually and replace it with something more appropriate in a place like this. Until then, we all can enjoy the UFO :D

I agree about the lamp what were they thinking? It is so beautiful.

I have no idea!
It would be so much better without it.

Wow - awesome church !

Yep :)

It looks like the frame of a table but without glass.__.

hahahha it does :D

Wow, such a beautiful place!

Oh yes.. I have to go back there.

Such an amazing church 👍🏻

It is :)

Virgin Mary is kept in the foreground in most churches. I don't know what is meant by the symbols on the wall, but the fact that the Virgin Mary is remembered as a holy woman who was followed and prayed for as the salvation of humanity in the past sets an example for all our women. Maybe that chandelier in the middle is a trap prepared for malicious people to fall on :))🙃

Maybe the person that had the idea should fall on it first :D

Well... that lamp is definitely not something you usually see in such places! And it does seem like not belonging to either!

Hehe no, it doesn't fit there at all. Strange idea someone had...

What a great discovery you have made dear friend @ewkaw, this is a beautiful church inside and out, the interior decoration is very interesting, it is a shame that they ruined it with this poorly designed lamp
Have a great day

Ya, it is beautiful!

The pictures, the story, the anlysis... very interesting!

Glad you liked it.

Thank you!

Beautiful church, but yes, the oval lighting is a blight on it. They could have used spot lighting at the windows to illuminate the ceiling painting. There are probably a hundred other ways to do it prooperly which means they were either lazy or it was done nefariously. These days I lean towards the ladder.

They could. I think most places go for this type of lights. They are still visible, but not in the middle like that. I really dont know why someone agreed to it.

Wow what a lovely post. 😍 This place just looks amazing and all the photographs are stunning..Thanks for sharing. 🙏 I really enjoyed this post.
