Heart of Gold (S1X13)

Airdate: August 19th 2003

Written by: Brett Matthews
Directed by: Thomas J. Wright

Running time: 44 min.

Heart of Gold stands as the final episode of Firefly, albeit not the last episode produced. Aired on the Sci-Fi Channel after the show's untimely cancellation, this episode was the last of three withheld from Fox's original run. Within the series' internal chronology, Heart of Gold holds the distinction of being the penultimate episode.

The plot unfolds on an unnamed planet, where the woman named Nandi (played by Melinda Clarke) presides over a ranch-like brothel. Once a Companion and close friend of Inara, Nandi seeks her assistance after a tense confrontation with Rance Burgess (played by Fredric Lehne), a violent and sadistic local tycoon. Rance seeks to claim the unborn child of Petaline (played by Tracy Leah Ryan), one of Nandi's girls, with whom he had previously had sex. Mal, ever the protector, agrees to lend a hand, but soon regrets his decision as he discovers Rance is accompanied by a small army of heavily armed thugs, significantly outmanning and outgunning the crew of Serenity. As the crew prepares for a climactic showdown, Mal becomes ensnared by Nandi's charms, sparking a sequence of events that will force Inara to re-examine her relationship and professional ties with Mal.

Creator Joss Whedon, once celebrated as feminist for his progressive outlook on gender dynamics, crafts a compelling narrative in Heart of Gold. The title itself, a nod to the "hooker with a heart of gold" trope, is somewhat ironic. Nandi, played by the beautiful and charismatic Melinda Clarke, is a strong, independent woman carving out her own business empire. She defies both the constraints of the Companion Guild and local thugs, embodying a fierce determination that resonates throughout the episode. Her employees, despite being women, actively participate in the fight against Rance's men, and it is a female character who fires the last shot, ultimately settling the matter.

The episode also delves into the world-building of Firefly, drawing distinctions between Companions and ordinary prostitutes. While Companions enjoy elite status and respect in the civilised world, they are also governed by strict rules. Inara, once considered a paragon of this elite world, reveals her own frailty in this episode. Despite her insistence on professionalism, she is not immune to her feelings and is shown to be just as vulnerable as those who do not belong to her elite world.

While the episode tackles intriguing themes, including a subplot of Wash and Zoe discussing the pros and cons of potential parenthood during their dangerous nomadic life, its exploration at times leaves something to be desired. The character of Rance Burgess, played by Fredric Lehne, is almost cartoon-like in his one-dimensional evil. The final Western-like showdown, featuring horses and thugs armed with a strange mix of 19th and 20th-century firearms, makes the episode look cheaper than it actually is.

Moreover, the episode also gives interesting insight into the evolving standards of censorship of US broadcast television in the early 21st century, or the possible reasons why it was originally withheld from airing. It features a scene in which Rance, trying to confirm his authority over his men, forces Chari (played by Kimberly McCullough), one of the prostitutes who secretly works as his spy in the bordello, to go on her knees for the implied sex act.

Despite these flaws, Heart of Gold remains a mostly satisfying episode, showcasing the great potential of Firefly that was tragically never realised.
