Saving food from being thrown away
Hello readers, actifitters and hivians yesterday it was my first time riding a cargo bike to save food from being thrown away at the supermarket.
A few days ago I registered at the cargo bike rent community. It's a great community providing to rent cargo bikes for free after registration. The registration fee is only 5€. Once you paid the fee you get your login data and then you can rent cargo bikes for free.
There are about 20 cargo bikes to rent all over the city. The bikes are mostly sponsored from companies or funded from social lotteries. I think it's a great offer and I wanna give shoutout to the people investing their time to make this possible.
The station is not far from home but I still took the bike to go there. Half an hour before the rent started I got a mail with all the important data and the numbers for the locks.
It feels different from riding a usual bike but I got used to it very quick. Unfortunately the electric motor is in repair at the moment I had to cycle without electrical support.
It took me about 10 min to cycle to the supermarket where I met with two other people. We went into the market and collected all the food which couldn't be sold over the day or reached it's best before date.
This shopping trolley is what I saved. My two colleagues saved the same amount of food. It was all kind of food you can imagine from strawberries, mushrooms, bread, meat, melons, diary products, many other fruits and vegetables.
My rented cargo bike was absolutely filled. On the way home I visited friends to give them many of the saved stuff. Then I went home and brought all things I need to my flat. There still was a big amount left and I brought this to the distribution and sharing point. This points are organized to leave edible food for others who can take from the point what they need.
After I had organized all the food I left the cargo bike at the station and went home on my bike.
All the action over the day resulted in over 13000 steps. Doing something good for me and for sustainability.
