Happy birthday to humans! Today is the 7th day of the Chinese Lunar New Year, also known as 人日 (Human Day). There is a tradition especially in my family to eat 七样菜 (Seven vegetable dishes). In my family, we make a stir fry consisting of 7 types of green vegetables. I eat it with Char siu, Steamed egg, tempe, and rice.
From my grandmother, this tradition is to bring good luck. Same as no cleaning in Chinese New Year which means to not sweep good luck away. Sometimes this tradition is different from one to other families, it's like they have their version to make the dish. Commonly, the lucky vegetables that are used are:
- Celery (芹菜)
- Chinese chives (韭菜)
- Big mustard green (大芥菜)
- Chinese Cabbage (大白菜)
- Romaine Lettuce (生菜)
- Leek (韭葱)
- Scallion (葱)
Depending on the tradition, it can change to what they want. My grandmother made it with any 7 green vegetables that were in the fridge. May luck bless your home.
