Unearthing a Hidden Gem in Mechelen

Here’s the thing about working in a city for years: you think you’ve explored every corner, but then a random lunch break proves you wrong. Today, I ventured out in the drizzle to Mechelen’s city park—a spot I somehow overlooked for almost five years! The rain slicked the paths, the trees were bare, and the pond reflected the moody gray sky perfectly. I wasn’t expecting much, but nature always finds a way to charm you.

The highlight? A heron just casually doing its thing by the water’s edge, like it owned the place. Wildlife in the middle of a city—who knew?

It was a quick 2km stroll, just enough to hit 5k steps, but it made me realize this park deserves a second chance. Winter doesn’t do it justice, but spring? I’m betting on lush greenery and vibrant blooms. For now, it was a peaceful pause in the middle of a gray office day. The city park is officially on my list of go-to spots. What other gems have I been missing all this time?

Pretty sure it will look amazing in spring and summer! It has an extensive flower-part to it, with a specialized rose-garden! I might just go back there quite often, not just for the steppage, but for some macro shots!
